Just a quick announcement: Yes, I do plan to finish "Lessons." I have not abandoned it. The next chapter is nearly done, and there will be at least one -- *maybe* two -- before it is complete. *However*, it will have to wait until I am over this blasted summer cold and feel up to writing.

Title: A Light In The East by Spiced Wine
Rated: Mature [ - ]
Summary:

A crossover gift-story between Esteliel's Ethuil'waew and my Dark Prince verse.

What would have happened had Legolas not been able to flee to Imladris and Glorfindel when he found he was pregnant? What if he fell into entirely different hands?
~~~
After the Last Alliance, Vanimórë, freed for a time from Sauron's control, made himself the ruler of a Sud Sicanna, a wealthy city in the Harad. Five hundred years later, he journeys to Szrel Kain on the Sea of Rhun where rulers of the East are meeting to discuss renewing their attacks upon Gondor. Vanimórë goes to gather information, to keep his finger on the pulse of events.
~~~
Legolas, banished from his home, wanders into the hands of a clan traveling back to Rhun after a summer of trading. The Men, afraid he will bring ill-luck on them, mean to sell him, and in lands where the Dark Gods are worshiped Legolas' uniqueness would mean sacrifice, the death of both himself and the child he bears: Glorfindel's son.
~~~
He falls instead into the hands of the Dark Prince, the son of Sauron, who understands neglect and abuse only too well...
~~~
Glorfindel felt anguish as deep as a crack in the world in Vanimórë's soul.

“I know how Legolas feels better than thou canst imagine. Thou didst name me Vanimórë. That is my name in truth. Thou hast penetrating sight, or did. Vanimórë Gorthaurion. The son of Sauron holds and will protect Legolas Thranduilion and
thy son. Is that not wonderfully ironic, Glorfindel?”
~~~
It is fascinating to see how *everyone* is reacting to the 'Faerboth'.
I wonder if Legolas will realize just how much of a catalyst he is.
This is just amazing writing once again. Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful story.
Author's Response:
Yes, Sam, it is interesting, because really it should only effect Glorfindel and Legolas, but it seems to be a bit more complex than that...poor Legolas does not know much at all at the moment, but as time goes on, I hope he will.
Thank-you so much, Sam!
Reviewer: Alquien Signed
"The faerboth must have been the catalyst for something far more, unless it is more powerful than thou knowest."
--Oh yes, I think it must be. Perhaps Legolas and Gîl's presence acted as an amplifier -- or should I say medium for it? Because no-one seems to quite understand what exactly *did* happen.
And Thranduil -- he is certainly a major player. For Landroval to actively seek him out and take him to Celeirdúr and Bainalph -- that was a surprise. (And one that is somewhat unnerving to at least one of the runaways.)
I can hardly wait for the next chapter. Thank you so much for sharing this.
Author's Response:
Because no-one seems to quite understand what exactly *did* happen.
No, they don't, Sam, which troubles Glorfindel especialy, as he feels having been born in Aman, he should know.
For Landroval to actively seek him out and take him to Celeirdúr and Bainalph -- that was a surprise. (And one that is somewhat unnerving to at least one of the runaways.)
Yes, there is something large and mystical going on here, involving (I think, ha, think! my stories are organic, lol) the past and the future and elements beyond both. Thranduil is part of it.
Thank-you so much for continuing to read, Sam, and for reviewing!
Oh. Wow. Wow. Just... wow. This is just so *amazing*. Where to start, where to start...
Well, Glorfindel certainly had a close call, didn't he? Except for the bond between he and Legolas and Gîlríon (and the pain his death would cause both of them), I don't think he would be missed very much. Which is shocking in itself, really. Glorfindel has a lot to think about, especially how he is now perceived by so many who should look up to him. (Introspection will be hard for him; he has a very long way to go.)
And then there is Sauron. Even he is intrigued by the strangeness of everything. "But he did not believe the Elves had folded the Earth. Even Glorfindel, newly returned from Valinor, reborn and so powerful then that Sauron had felt his presence like an earth-bound sun, could not have folded the Earth. But something had. And it was a close-run thing." And this intrigues him like nothing else could. I think he's actually having fun (well, in some ways) despite being annoyed he cannot be in charge just yet.
Last but hardly least is Thranduil, Celeirdúr and Bainalph. Things are just starting; there is so much history between all of them; each holds a key to the greater puzzle, though they don't realize it yet.
This is really wonderful; thank you so much for sharing it. :)
Author's Response: Aww, thank-you so much for reviewing, Sam. {hugs!} and for liking the chapter enough to comment.
Glorfindel has a lot to think about, especially how he is now perceived by so many who should look up to him.
This is exactly what he should be doing now, really thinking hard about what that episode showed him with regards to how other people feel about him. It is not going to be easy at all, no, and it shouldn't be. As Esteliel pointed out, he should be left feeling stunned that Legolas wanted to remain with Vanimórë. While Glorfindel knows Van is not evil, the very thought that Legolas wants to stay with the son of Sauron must pull the ground from under his feet.
Sauron is definitely intrigued, and knows what happened, but not how. In an odd way, he is enjoying himself while he readies himself to murder :\
And Thranduil, Celeirdúr and Bainalph. Yes. That was also a close-run thing! XD
Hugs and thank-you for reviewing. :)
“My people are of the woods, the forest streams, the autumn winds.” Vanimórë ... hearing the love and longing in his voice.
“I wish I could give them back to thee, my dear.”
--There are times when I don't think that Legolas will be fully healed until he is back in the woods again (especially the woods where he was born.)
“Legolas has many gifts.”
--He does indeed and only now are other people beginning to realize it.
Author's Response: There are times when I don't think that Legolas will be fully healed until he is back in the woods again (especially the woods where he was born.)
I think you are right, Sam. I envisage the Elves (especially those born in Middle-earth) as feeling incredibly bound to their lands in a way that it strengthens them and they effect it in ways far more deep than husbandry. It's like the old legend of the Fisher King, in a way, and I do think Legolas is homesick, and it is only exacerbated by his fears. Vanimórë never felt that; he had no love for Tol-in-Gaurhoth, so he can be 'at home' anywhere, but he does have more than an inkling of what it might feel like to Legolas.
Thank-you for the review. :)
"Oropher had told Thranduil of the gift... and Thranduil, who had never heard the full story before, had been troubled... He could never truly accept this peculiarity of his bloodline..."
--And here is the real cause of all the trouble, or so it seems to me. It is very sad Thranduil fears this gift, which he should be happy about.
Author's Response: It is very sad Thranduil fears this gift, which he should be happy about.
Yes. I agree. I think it is because it is so strange, and he does think it's unnecessary. He is not sure what the *point* is, because in this 'verse Elves are naturally bi ( but of course there will be those who prefer one sex over the other like Bainalph and Legolas and Glorfindel.) so would it have been such a problem for one of the first Elves who received this gift to find a woman who was agreeable to bear a child? I think that shows he did not understand the intensity of a love that precluded that, whereas Glorfindel would, as in Esteliel's 'verse he longed for children but wouldn't marry and 'use' a wife to give him children.
I believe Thranduil would have been accepting and happy had Elvýr had a child with his betrothed, but of course, that ended so horrifically, that all this grief tangled to include the gift, which he now sees as more of a curse.
Thank-you, Sam for the review :)
It is so interesting to see how things unfolded from Thranduil's pov. I really enjoyed this chapter.
Author's Response: Thank-you, Sam. I wanted to write it from Thranduil's perspective because he (like Glorfindel) has a long, hard way to go in making recompense to Legolas, and there are certain things he simply denied and refused to truly face.
Reviewer: Alquien Signed
Date: October 27, 2011 Title: Chapter 8: Chapter 8 ~ Naked To Truth ~
This is just brilliant writing!
I am very intrigued about the unusual bond that is formed between not only Thranduil and Bainalph but their respective lands as well. That is just an extra layer to an already complicated relationship.
And then there is the whole Elvýr-Legolas issue. It is very unusual for Elves to be reborn in such a manner but then, I think the only one who might have any genuine insight into the matter is Bainalph since both Celeirdúr and Thranduil are too emotionally caught up in everything.
Also, I am a little bit worried about Thranduil's plans for Glorfindel. =(
"No-one could agree on how the cold vein of distrust and bitterness that the wood-Elves felt for the Noldor had burned into a state of war."
--There is a tiny part of me that thinks it sounds an awful lot like jealousy or a lover's quarrel. No idea *why* though, mind you.
"Ugly incidents occurred, and a saying had arisen in Imladris, 'You cannot rape a wood-Elf.'"
--Oh good grief! ::head desk:: And I imagine that there is a similar saying about the Noldor in Mirkwood. *sighs*
Glorfindel is finally seeing himself, for the first time in Ages, and it hurts.
In the end, I only feel sorry for Legolas and Gil, who are the only innocent ones in this whole rotten mess.
That being said, I can hardly wait for the next chapter(s)! :) Thank you so much for sharing this.
Author's Response: In the end, I only feel sorry for Legolas and Gil, who are the only innocent ones in this whole rotten mess.
That is true, Sam. I said on another review, no-one's blameless in this situation save those two.
I am very intrigued about the unusual bond that is formed between not only Thranduil and Bainalph but their respective lands as well. That is just an extra layer to an already complicated relationship.
I got this idea from the legend of the Fisher King. The king suffers a wound in his groin (usually -- and that has obvious sexual connotations) that will not heal, and his realm mirrors it, sometimes becoming a wasteland. To me, this implies that he is deeply bound to his land, and *is* the land in some way. I feel the Elves, especially the Silvans (and probably the Sindar of Doriath) may have had this mystical connection to the places where they lived. It is the same idea I used in 'The Summer King' in Magnificat II. If a ruler cares for and protects his land, if he sheds blood for it, loves it and its people, part of him (or her) goes into the land like a network of roots. The land strengthens the king, and he strengthens it. And if he gives himself wholly, as Finrod did, and Bainalph in this story, the binding is made ever deeper between ruler and land and subject: in this case it formed an indissoluble bond between Thranduil/Alphgarth, Bainalph/Thranduil and Bainalph/Alphgarth. That is why Thranduil realized he couldn't kill Bainalph; Bainalph is *part* of him, their souls wound together like tree-roots. (Whether Thranduil likes it or not.)
The land reflects its ruler's mental and physical health, in essence, and although the Greenwood did not suffer physically, as such, because of Thranduil's guilt and grief and hate, it did suffer through war. (And the Fisher King is not copyright, and the idea is not mine, so if any-one wanted to use the idea, that's fine by me. Like a lot of Tolkien's own work, it's based on myth.)
There is a tiny part of me that thinks it sounds an awful lot like jealousy or a lover's quarrel. No idea *why* though, mind you.
It would be interesting if that were the case, Sam. d;-) It is something else I will be considering.
Glorfindel is finally seeing himself, for the first time in Ages, and it hurts.
yes, he is and it does. And should.
It is very unusual for Elves to be reborn in such a manner
Yes, it would be, but I toy with the idea of it being possible, that Valinor is not the only place where Elves can be reborn. There must have been Elves who knew nothing of the Valar, and who would not have heeded the call to Mandos on death. (In this verse, most of the Silvans) It seems wrong that if they refused it, they were condemned to wander unhoused forever -- but that is something I am thinking about. (That perhaps another Power could grant it in Middle-earth, though who or what I don't know as yet.) And perhaps Legolas and Elvyr being so unique would have something to do with it.
Thank-you so very much for reviewing, Sam.
This is just so wonderful -- what amazing writing! (I really should be giving you line by line feedback, you know.)
I love how cleverly Sauron is playing his role as a Northman -- it is just fascinating. Though I rather hate the idea of how much else he is learning by staying quiet, for the moment. :/
I also find it interesting that some of the Men were also able to see something of the faerboth. As I have said before, Legolas is a key to so much more than *everyone* realizes.
I am glad to know that Glorfindel is finally doing some serious thinking about himself and what he has done.
"He was not Glorfindel the Beloved to Legolas, not a hero. And he had not cared. Until now."
He has a long way to go but I do have some small hope for him now. Better late than never, I hope. Though just how he will make amends, or if it is even possible -- that is still a question.
Thank you so much for sharing this.
*hugs*
Author's Response: Thank-you so much for reviewing, Sam.
Sauron will no doubt remember everything he learns, I'm afraid, and we'll have to see later how much use it is to him.
He has a long way to go but I do have some small hope for him now.
This was a place he needed to get to, a start at least.
Thank-you again for taking the time to comment, Sam!
