*grin* I just love this tail ...er...tale! Poor Legolas - you do give him a hard time (no pun intended). It was fun reading this again :)

Book II of of A Crucible Of Stars
Following on from events in A Light in the East, Legolas continues his journey south with Vanimórë, Maglor and the warriors of Sud Sicanna. Sauron hopes to separate the young prince and his son from Vanimórë, and continues to hide behind his assumed identity, and unbeknownst to him, the Mother's concealing power.
Further north, Glorfindel travels with Tindómion, and Legolas' brother Celeirdúr, with Bainalph, the Beautiful Swan. Thranduil, knowing he is acting unwisely, nevertheless sets out on his own, with, he believes, one aim in mind.
All are unaware of the power and love that links them one to the other, and what, in the end, it may come to mean.
This is their journey to A Far, Fierce Sky.

I've finally caught up with this, and I must say how much I've enjoyed it so far. I loved the moment where Glorfindel finds a strand of Legolas' hair on him. It's almost as though the Valar have decided that he must do much more to earn Legolas and his son, but he's just allowed that strand of hair as a reminder of what he's fighting for.
I like the fact that Thranduil is showing signs of a change of heart, too. Just as in Esteliel's tales, I hope there will be a future for them where they can all be together.
Author's Response:
Thank-you so much Neledi, I am glad you are enjoying what I am doing with the story so dar. I appreciate your review so much.
It's almost as though the Valar have decided that he must do much more to earn Legolas and his son, but he's just allowed that strand of hair as a reminder of what he's fighting for.
Yes, that is very much the idea behind that scene :)

I'd got very behind with this, so it was a pleasure to catch up. This chapter was so tense - you conyeyed the terror of the dark so well and Legolas's fear for Gil was heartbreaking. But at least Vanimore's eyes are opened to the true identity of Osulf. Now I just hope he can prevent the sacrifice.
Author's Response: Thank-you very much for reading, Naledi. There was a lot going on, and so I am very pleased it did come across as very tense. Yes, now Vanimórë knows, but is winging it as to what he can do.

I've already reviewed on your LJ, but I just wanted to say again how beautifully written this chapter is.
I'm divided as to how I want to see Legolas' immediate future turn out. Part of me wants his to have another baby - he's such a good father to Gil. But the other half of me wants to see him find a role for himself aside from being Glorfindel's lover and Gil's father. It will do him good to be away from Glorfindel in the hunt, and master the bow - especially as I think he'll turn out to be a better archer than Glorfindel.
So I'm really looking forward to seeing how this story progresses :)
Author's Response: Thank you so much, Naledi! *hugs* A part of me is also really tempted by the thought of another child. Both he and Glorfindel really love Gîl; both of them could use the chance to truly enjoy another pregnancy, now that so much between them has changed. Of course, just as you point out, Legolas still needs to grow so much; and he still worries so much about what sort of role model he will be for Gîl. It would do him good to grow more secure in his own worth before they have another child. But who knows what Eru has planned for them... ;)

I'm so glad to see this tale here. I've been thinking for a while that I'd like to start it again from the beginning, so I'm going to try to make the time to do just that.
Let the Legolas torture begin :)
Author's Response: It's been so nice to suddenly check in and see all my fanfic friends here! Lovely. OK- will be posting it soon as I will have some time to myself after the weekend I hope. I want to tweak this new posting because when I first wrote this, I didn't know it was going to end up where it has!

It's a joy to reread the earlier chapters of this wonderful tale. I love your Legolas - he's cheeky, infuriating, yet also he is a loyal friend and can be deadly serious when need be. I think you've caught the interactions between him and Gimli perfectly. I particularly liked the part where he tells Gimli what he does fear.
I'd also forgotten about the chemistry between Legolas and Elladan in these chapters. I'm almost torn between who I want him to end up with :)

I hope you'll post more chapters here soon. I've really enjoyed rereading these. I know I've said it before, but I love the relationship between Legolas and Gimli, especially the bickering over their respective scores. And the moment the sea-longing hits Legolas is perfect - it fits in very well with how Legolas describes it to the Hobbits in Minas Tirith.
I'd forgotten so much of the events of the earlier chapters, and rereading them has cast new light on later events.
Author's Response: Hey Naledi- I am rather hoping you have posted too! My one worry is that things I mssed earlier will pop up - I hope I can smoothe out any blips as I post. Thank you again, Naledi.
Date: July 25, 2011 Title: Chapter 8: Chapter 8
Now that I know what happens in later chapters, I find the chapters dealing with Elrohir's assault on Legolas even more powerful. I can see what drove Elrohir to do such a thing, terrible though it was. I wonder if Legolas will ever piece together his memories and work out what happened?
I also like how Gimli deals with Aragorn concerning Legolas' sea-longing. Aragorn must have known that Legolas was likely to hear gulls at Pelargir, so I'm glad that Gimli called him to account.
Author's Response:
Well its funny you should ask that! I have jus tposted ch 33 and it should start to answer you question.
Yes- I always felt Aragorn got away with things a bit. Glad you spotted it!

I must have missed the updates when I was on holiday, but I've had a lovely time reading the last two chapters :)
There's so much going on in these chapters that I don't know where to start, so I'll go with the bit uppermost in my mind, which is the sheer sensuality of the scene between Elladan and Legolas. I love how you engage all the senses in your writing. I really felt as though I was experiencing the scene with Elladan.
The interaction between 'nana' Gimli and Legolas was perfect. I could really see Gimli's agitation as he watched Legolas up on the mast. And I particularly liked the fact that you got in the 'Up with your beard Durin's son' line. I like the way that although your story deviates from the books, you still anchor it to the original at vital moments.
That's a gorgeous picture of Legolas by Mienepies. I couldn't see it properly on FFnet. Is the artist also known as Capucine? It looks just like some pics done for Erobey's fics.
I hope you can update soon!
Author's Response:
Thank you Naledi, however I am not updating here until I finish it now- basically I want this site to have the polished and slashy version so I will finish it on ffnet and then post it here later. I know there are things now that I will write differently. I know you read on ffnet anyway so hang in there please. You know how improtna tit is to get those reviews!!xx
And yes, it is capuncine! Isnt she wonderful! And now you mention it, yes of course- that's where I have seen her work before.
Please write something to keep me going!! Love your work.

Yay! It's good to see a return to SoT on Faerie!
I adore your Legolas (I've said it before, I know, and I'm sure I'll say it again.) He's true to Tolkien's Legolas, but with his character fleshed out. And what flesh....mmm! Your Legolas definitely puts the 'wood' back into Wood-elf lol!
I liked the way you explained Legolas confusing Elrohir with Elladan by saying that he thought the difference in their Song was down to the healing battle. But I felt for him when he discovered his mistake and thought they were toying with him. Poor Legolas. Despite his sexual aggressiveness, he's got a fair bit of hero-worship going for the twins. It must hurt to think they're laughing at him.
Author's Response:
Oh yes- hero worship is spades! He ahs a great capacity for that so you are right, it really hurts him... but we know he gets over it:))

Such a thrilling battle scene, and you convey the horror of it so well. My heart was thumping when Legolas went down under the boulders, even though I knew he must survive! You have so much more torment left in store for him :)
I really don't mind how you post the rest of this. Just as long as you do!
Author's Response:
THank you Naledi. We certainly have got a lot more in store for our poor Elf!!! I'll post a bit more tomorrow.x
Date: August 02, 2012 Title: Chapter 13: Chapter 13 Many Meetings
I love the interaction between Legolas and Gimli at the end. It made me smile but at the same time brought a tear to my eye, because you made Legolas' emotion so clear.
I almost hope Gimli and Aragorn do bet on Legolas again because I'd love to know what he'd do to Aragorn!
Wonderful pic of Legolas and Eomer. The detail is exquisite :)
Author's Response:
Thank you Naledi- I htink you and Spiced Wine are the only ones reading this so it's so nice to hear. I've posted a load of chapters just to get them up really as I suddenly realsied I have neglected this -busy on something new. Yes, that picture is really lovely, there are some others which you probably havent seen yet. They'll come up over the next few chapters I think.
Date: August 02, 2012 Title: Chapter 14: Chapter 14 Rávëyon
Amazing chapter! There's so much heat between Legolas and Elrohir that I'm surprised the stones of Minas Tirith didn't melt.. It's good to read it again, knowing that they do eventually work things out between them.
Interesting question about the powers of the Nazguls' rings. All the rings seem to give the users what they want. So your interpretation seems plausible to me. The driving force of Men would be wealth, sex and power. And for kings of Men I think their overwhelming motivation would be power. So the rings would give them power over others. The ability to delve into another's thoughts would certainly help them achieve that.
Author's Response:
Yes, it was quite nice to read this again- you know how immersed you get when you are writing that you dont enjoy it as much as reading it - or differently anyway.
Yes- those Rings huh? There is so much to write if we had the time!!
Date: August 06, 2012 Title: Chapter 15: Chapter 15 Olorin
Fantastic - a 6-chapter update! I'm enjoying reading these chapters close together. It gives me an even better appreciation of the story. I can't wait to get to these, but unfortunately I haven't got time today. But I promise to read and review asap :)
Author's Response:
I realised I was getting behind and just want ot get it posted ot be hoenst. I am writing something new so really I've not been checking this as I go. I might slash it up a bit more later- I have a very nice bit I edited when they get to the mountain:)
Date: August 08, 2012 Title: Chapter 16: Chapter 16 Awakening
I think this is one of my favourite chapters. The perfection of the moment where Legolas enables Elrohir to hear his own song almost moves me to tears. It's so beautiful. And then with typical Ziggy-esque cruelty, you choose that moment to send Eomer in! But when Elrohir recognises his own song, and wonders if he's not as depraved as he had feared - that the point where you know Legolas and Elrohir are right for each other. I'm just glad they get there in the end!
Author's Response:
Cruel? Moi? cackle.
Yes- I like these next chapters the most- one of my favourtie bits is Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli.
Thank you as always my dear.
Date: August 13, 2012 Title: Chapter 19: Chapter 19 The Request
Finally getting to this after a weekend away. This is vintage Gandalf - sending someone to their death for the greater good. Legolas seems so young here, it's heartbreaking. And now I know how close Legolas came to a fate worse than death, it's even more difficult to read. The next few chapters are going to be tough. Thank goodness I know it works out in the end!
Author's Response:
I love you Naledi- you are such a great reviewer! Yes- next few chapters are, I think, the best in terms of action until we get to Mordor..although I like Osgiliath too when they come together.
Thank you my dear.
Date: August 13, 2012 Title: Chapter 20: Chapter 20 The Gift of Men
This is a brilliant chapter. So dark it made me shudder. It was difficult to read Elrohir's reaction to Legolas' attempted apology. Because of course that was what Legolas wanted, but not like that. And especially when Legolas has just heard that he is to meet certain death from a Nazgul.
I hope you put more chapters up soon!
Author's Response:
It's been nice re-reading it from a more objective pov too. I can relax and enjoy it except I keep thinking how I could have improved it- but not going to do that as I'm working on a new story and need to build a link between two bits- much less dramatic than Sons though.
I'll put more chapters up today if you like.
Date: August 13, 2012 Title: Chapter 21: Chapter 21 The Remains of the Fellowship
Thanks for posting two more chapters. Just what I needed!
I love Gimli and Pippin in this, too. So insistent in ferreting out the truth. I really felt for Gimli and Elladan when they discovered they'd been given the slip. I'd forgotten about the mithril leaf, and how Legolas asked him to convince Thranduil he was Legolas' friend. Although I'm glad he won't have to do that, at the same time I'm curious to know how a first meeting between Gimli and Thranduil would go.
On to the next chapter!
Author's Response:
Oooh- that's got to be written sometime, and wait till he hears about Elrohir!!!!
Date: August 13, 2012 Title: Chapter 22: Chapter 22 Obsession
And now the serious angst begins. I love your dark, tormented Elrohir, and this is him at his darkest. No wonder Legolas can't resist him. The way he summons the Nazgul shows just how powerful he is and how terrible he would become if he gave in to them. I'm in awe of your characters!
Did you post a graphic? It doesn't show for me.
Author's Response:
Argh- I thought it did. Go to LOTR fanfiction for all the graphics- I dont know why it wont copy here and I know bugger all about IT.
Thank you as always. Another chapter up shortly. Within hours if I can stir myself!
Date: August 13, 2012 Title: Chapter 23: Chapter 23 Úlairi
Nothing tame about the torment here! I felt as though my own flesh was being torn apart by the Nazguls' knives. It was so intense. I wish I could say the worst was over for Legolas, but I know it isn't. *sobs*
Because in spite of it all, in spite of that violent assault, in spite of Elrohir's goading him to fight at Linhir, in spite of all his cruelty and insults, Legolas knew Elrohir. He had heard his song. When Elrohir had knelt so chastely between his thighs and pressed a warm and gentle hand against his wounded breast, Legolas had heard the eagles soaring majestic and fierce and the clean steel of the cold and snow on the mountains, high, high beyond the reach of man or elf. But beneath that courage and fierce pride, he had heard the notes of a terrible loneliness, and absolute dread, and it seemed to him that a child stood and silently watched a ship disappear over the edge of the grey sea….
That was amazing. I'm in awe of the way that Legolas is so in tune with the Song that he can love Elrohir for what he truly is, even after his contemptuous actions.
Thanks for another glorious update, Ziggy. I've really had a SOT-fest today :)
Author's Response:
Good, I am glad you enjoyed that. I did change it a bit so the knives did pierce him- it felt right somehow and now I've got to make sure I remember later on!!!
I'll post the next few in a couple of days as I'm away for a few days now.
love

Date: August 19, 2012 Title: Chapter 24: Chapter 24 Nine for Mortal Men
I think this is just how the nine kings were originally persuaded to take their rings - They, like Elrohir, were shown the thing they wanted the most and were told the ring would enable them to take it. This is such a powerful - and painful - chapter.
I agree that the Nazgul would hate Thranduil the most. While the 'wise' have sat back and waited, Thranduil has never ceased to fight against the darkness. The Nazgul must be hugging themselves that they've got Legolas. The next few chapters are going to be so difficult to read!
Author's Response:
Yes, that's a really good point- I never thought of that! I know the Nazgul are almost empty and wraith-like but I cant resist giving Khamul a bit more personality - I souped it up a bit and edited stuff to try to make it more intense too. You are kind re-reading and revewing! Thank you dear.
Date: August 20, 2012 Title: Chapter 25: Chapter 25 Vigil
This is the bit I was dreading reading again. Legolas as an unhoused spirit and Elrohir's grief. Seeing Elrohir unable to let Legolas go is heartbreaking. And then when Legolas' spirit tries to stop Elrohir from using the ring it nearly started me sobbing all over again.
Thank the Valar for Elladan and Gimli! I love it when Elladan gallops into action :)
Author's Response:
I was cheering when I re-read that too! And yes- that poor ghost wringing its hands uselessly is just not the Legolas we know. Don't you wonder sometimes about our strange imaginings?/!!
Date: August 20, 2012 Title: Chapter 26: Chapter 26 Khamûl
Your Nazgul are truly evil! When I first read LOTR the Nazgul terrified me, especially when the hobbits were cornered on Weathertop. You've managed to capture the same feelings of menace, especially with the mist that almost seems to be an extension of their evil. I love how possession of the ring gives Elladan insight into the Nazgul's thoughts.
I get the feeling this isn't the first time the Nazgul have hunted an Elf's spirit in this way. Something tells me they've done this many times in Mirkwood. What a horrible thought - that there are elves who were denied release to Mandos.
Author's Response:
Yes- I know what you mean about that first encounter with the Nazgul. When I first read LOTR the thing I found most frightening was the way they surrounded the house Fatty was in - I think that's like evil coming too close, into your domestic environment. And then Weathertop, they seem even more otherworldly and menacing, that gradual circling and entrapment...I am very flattered that you got that same sense. And the Nazgul were sorcerors too as you know so I feel they would have had a bit more about them. I actually miss Khamul!
Date: August 20, 2012 Title: Chapter 27: Chapter 27 Fireflies
*cheers Elladan for throwing away the ring* I love how he's so in touch with his song by the end of the chapter.
I know there's still a long way to go for Legolas and the Twins, but at least Things don't look as bad as they did a couple of chapters ago! I'm glad you posted these together and didn't leave me hanging! Thanks for this latest round of updates. I always enjoy reading your stories :)
Author's Response:
It's for you really, Naledi - only you and Spiced are reading it but you both make it so worth while and I am being quite careful in editing to make it more intense - you write lovely reviews and are so kind to review every chapter!

Date: August 20, 2012 Title: Chapter 28: Chapter 28 The Houses of Healing
Oh Ziggy - you're determined to wring every last tear from me this evening, I see! Poor Legolas, being trapped in a nightmare, alone with the Eye. And I suppose that when he cried out for Raveyon (or however it's spelt!) no one realised he was asking for Elrohir.
I liked this being in Pippin's POV for the most part. It works well, considering Pippin doesn't really know what's going on. His confusion is a good filter to see the chapter through!
Still one more chapter to go!
Author's Response:
I'm trying to keep ahead of you but dang, you're fast! Yes- that idea of being trapped and no way out is a real nightmare, isnt it- and of course, you're right that no one knows who he means- and you'll remember that continues for a bit longer just to keep everyone on tenterhooks!
I love writing Pippin- his voice seems to come very easily.
