AU: Legolas' sword pointed at Glorfindel's throat. "Yield - or everyone dies."
~~*~~*~~~

Legolas' sword pointed at Glorfindel's throat. "Yield - or everyone dies."

Glorfindel gazed down at the slender prince. He had no wish to yield but he had lost track of Elrond and his sons during the long battle. Fearing for their safety, he closed his eyes and let his sword fall to the ground. The dull clatter seemed to echo in the unexpected stillness.

“Kneel to me.” The young prince hissed and Glorfindel dropped to both knees, his golden head bowed. “Very good indeed.”

Glorfindel felt the tip of the blade press lightly under his chin and he raised his head, keeping his eyes lowered in respect.

“You may speak, lord of Gondolin. I am certain you have questions you wish to ask.”

“What has happened to...” Glorfindel paused, uncertain how to frame the questions. “... to?”

“Elrond and his sons live, as do most of his staff. Is that what you wished to know?”

“Yes it is, hir nin.”

“Bring them forward, that he may see I speak the truth and not doubt my words.” Legolas spoke to an unfamiliar Silvan guard. Glorfindel watched as Elrond was marched forward, his arms bound to his sides but standing straight and tall, bruised but still dignified. The twins were forced forward, still struggling despite being bound and gagged. “As you see, they are are well. I am told that the advisor known as Erestor was injured, and is even now being treated by the healers. Does this satisfy you?”

“Yes, hir nin. Thank you.”

“So, the question now is what to do with you – and them.” Legolas eyed the Peredhel family and turned back to Glorfindel. “I am told that you think of these two brats as your nephews and Elrond as your brother. Is this true?”

“It is true, hir nin. I...” Glorfindel stopped as Legolas snapped his fingers in front of Glorfindel's eyes.

“Enough of this 'hir nin'. You may call me 'sir' for now.”

“Yes, sir.”

“You think of them as family. Yet to my knowledge, only Elrond has chosen to be numbered among the Firstborn. Have his sons made their choices known?”

“No, sir. At least, not to me. If they have made their choice, they have only told their father or perhaps their grandparents.”

“Very well then.” Legolas eyed the twins speculatively and Glorfindel felt suddenly afraid. “I find that I am curious to know their decision. Aren't you curious, Gondolindrim?”

Glorfindel remained silent, not daring to answer. Legolas turned away from Glorfindel and walked over to the twins, gazing intently into their grey eyes and slowly running his hand over their sleek dark hair.

“Just like silk,” the prince murmured. “Lovely.” Glorfindel and Elrond watched uneasily as the twins tossed their heads slightly, trying to pull away from the unwanted touch. “Ah, they are spirited as well as beautiful. I have never ridden a Noldor mount, yet I believe I will have my chance.”

“Sir, you said if I yielded that none would die.”

“No, beautiful one. I said if you did not yield, everyone would die. Death is a part of every war, as you should know.” Legolas turned his attention away from Glorfindel and back to the twins. “They now belong to my father but he is generous and will not mind sharing them with me.”

“But you cannot touch them in a carnal way. Sir. It is forbidden.”

“True, I cannot touch Elrond in such a manner. However, he is the special concern of my father. These two though – no-one knows their choice. There is one way to find out though, isn't there?”

“You couldn't.” Glorfindel gasped, terror washing over him. The youngest prince of Mirkwood was as deadly as he was beautiful – a chilling combination. Legolas' icy smile reached his eyes, and Glorfindel swallowed nervously. “You wouldn't.”

“Wouldn't I though. Come here.” Legolas jerked Glorfindel to his feet and walked him a short distance away, so they were no longer within sight or hearing of the captives. Legolas stared hard at Glorfindel, forcing the older elf to meet his eyes and accept his will. “Very well, since you care for them so much and know them so well, you tell me what their choice is. If you are correct, they remain unmolested. If you are wrong, though... I suggest that you not be wrong, Glorfindel.”

Glorfindel bowed his head, silently asking Eru to help him find the right words.

And then he spoke.
