@Ziggy - Yes, I wouldn't call it 'magic'; there's not a great deal of what we'd think of as 'magic' in Tolkien. There was a definite 'method' of doing things

I like the idea that the elves just have a different Science- that they do not just wave a magic wand but there is a proper scientifc method. They live forever- they would do, wouldn't they.

@Alpha - Tolkien never explains how he did it, or how he made the Fëanorion lamps, or the Palantiri. You just have to -- make it up :)
