Master list of a review re-post project on LiveJournal I completed in January 2013, which doubles as a list of Silm fic recs.
I re-posted one of my longer reviews per author. The earliest of these reviews are from the MEFAs in 2010, which means that the work reviewed is all fairly recent. The selection is rather idiosyncratic and a couple of the stories are perhaps only marginally Silm fic, but I can vouch for it that the stories are all excellent!

An alternative take on Eol Moriquendi, Aredhel, and Maeglin. The same writer I recced before and for the same reason. I must quote from her again:
the Silmarillion was written from the point of view of Noldorian scholars and translated centuries later by Bilbo Baggins. The Noldor were not the biggest fans of Avar elves like Eol.
Suspicious historial account is very suspicious.

As his father rides to defend his small fiefdom, Maeglin creates beauty. Silmarillion oneshot.
Recommended by: Urloth
Recommender's comments:
As said by the author: featuring a Maeglin who is not yet evil or crazed, and a father who loves him.
Becuase the popular fanon of unloved-father issue Maeglin can get to be a bit much. A beautiful introspective piece about Maeglin and what his life might have been like in Nan Elmoth growing up.
I like this version of Maeglin. I'm sticking with him.

Edit: The Series is now available on AO3.

Recommender's comments: It is the first story of a series, set in the Third Age while the Ring War is resurfacing. The absolutly lovely twist in the storyline: Maedhros survived, managing to stay in contact with Maglor and Elrond. Due to his status and his history it is still not a happy fic (or a slash one, only gen) but there beginning's of healing in the Feanorian's hearts and some endearing hurt/comfort moments.
I recommened the series (three stories so far, but ongoing) especially to those who like what-if fanfictions and those who love Maglor and Maedhros. Fans will get their share, simply for the fact that they are not dead for once and with the author's writing style the series leaves defintely an impression. Certainly I one could get addicted to.
Elder Shadows (Maedhros, Maglor, Elrond)
Overcoming the Dark (Maedhros, Glorfindel, Legolas)
Gathering Clouds (Maglor, Maedhros, Celebrimbor, Elrond)
Grief (Maedhros, Maglor, Arwen)

"When Thangorodrim was broken and Morgoth overthrown, Sauron put on his fair hue again and did obeisance to Eönwë the herald of Manwë, and abjured all his evil deeds. And some hold that this was not at first falsely done, but that Sauron in truth repented, if only out of fear..."

Recommender's comments: I really appreciate the way December consider the complexities of emotion inherent in an incestuous relationship. It's not something I see very often, and when it is written, people seem to overlook the emotional coils and prohibitions of such an attraction, when that is actually what they should focus on the most. It's really well done in this story.
The sex is revelatory and savage and beautiful, and the two brothers -- well, they go a long way to making me forget how they were in the films. This is Boromir and Faramir from the books.

Recommender's comments: A beautiful Aragorn/Legolas adventure/friendship. Nightwing is a truly wonderful writer; this story is filled with pathos and danger. One of the first fanfic stories I ever found, and one which made me like Aragorn more than decades of reading the books (or seeing the films. he's just not a favorite of mine.)
It is the one genfic I can keep reading, probably because the relationship between Aragorn and Legolas is so lovely. Unfortunately, it has not been updated in years, (although I recently heard from the author and hope she will return to it.) but it is still well worth the read, as it is a long story and about two-thirds complete.

Recommender's comments: Occupying a 'niche within a niche' in the Silmarillion fandom, this incredible story tells of Sauron's capture by Ar-Pharazôn, last king of Númenor. Elfscribe's Sauron is brilliant, manipulative and beautiful, and the emerging story between Ar-Pharazôn's lovely male courtesan Sûla, and the king's page, Tigôn is filled with poignancy, danger and sensuality. These two young characters are Elfscribe's original and the best OMC's I have ever read.

A Song of Ice And Fire ~ G.R.R. Martin.
Setting: King's Landing, post Joffrey's death.
Jamie Lannister is a lonely man, burdened by secrets, and so is Loras Tyrell. Together, they find that they can share and lighten the load.
Audience: Teen and up. M/M and mentions of Jaime/Cersei twincest. Mild M/M content.

Or an account of the battle in the forest of Brethil as seen by Beleg Cúthalion, told in two parts.
Recommended by: Himring
Recommender's comments:
This story is an unusual take on an unusual subject--and as such highly interesting! The protagonist, as often in Robinka's stories, is Beleg. But not necessarily the same Beleg we already know: this, I suspect, is one of the toughest Belegs around. Although very much a Sinda and in touch with nature, he seems unusually robust and soldierly. (So does Robinka's Mablung.) This is definitely a Beleg who has spent a lot of his time patrolling the borders against orcs and other malefactors, dealing with a merciless enemy. Yet Robinka's Beleg by no means lacks a heart; he has a knack with children and is ready to sympathize with the young and weak. The Battle of Brethil is an episode in the history of Beleriand that is often overlooked--and yet it is not only the exception to the rule that Thingol withdrew his troops from any major involvement in the struggle against Morgoth after the first battle of Beleriand: if we believe what the Silmarillion text says, this was in fact the battle that stopped Morgoth's troops advancing further into Southern Beleriand at the time of the Dagor Bragollach and therefore an important event at a time of great turmoil in the history of Beleriand. The battle of Brethil--or rather the friendship between Doriath and the Haladin of Brethil more generally-- is also the exception to Thingol's general rule of non-involvement with Edain (before his daughter took a hand, that is). It is not often one sees a lot of the Haladin, except for Haleth herself. Robinka devotes considerable attention to the Haladin community, as observed by Beleg as a friendly outsider, and to the characters of Halmir and Haldir. We also get a glimpse of young Hurin and Huor. This all might sound like a very masculine proposition. But in fact the story features not one, but two strong original female characters. Beleg's love interest may be involved in the gentler pursuits, such as cooking and library work, but she is still headstrong and independent-minded. And Beleg's female colleague Sullinn is a formidable Ranger, who is capable of giving Beleg a run for his money!Chapter One deals with the run-up to the battle. As such it begins cheerfully, even humorously, but the tension mounts and in the description of ugly incidents such as happen in real war, Robinka pulls no punches. She should be strongly encouraged to write the next chapter and give us the battle itself.

Recommender's comments: Not as strange as the author’s claims, the story is haunting and full of mystery while also intriguing and enthralling. Here Ossë is not a simple and simple-minded villain, and Uinen is not all a love-struck girl without some wildness/daring to herself.

His mother was Elven.
His father was Sauron.
His birth was accomplished by the blackest sorcery of Morgoth Bauglir.
He was forged as a double-edged sword is forged, as lethal and as beautiful.
And they tested him to breaking-point.
He would not break.
